What is this?
Junetide is an Original Works Gift Exchange. It is inspired by Yuletide and Yuletart, but is based around original works rather than fanworks. Both art and fiction are welcome! All genres and styles are welcome!
In a nutshell: Every participant in Junetide will create something (like a story, a comic, or a picture) based on another participant’s prompt. If you wish to receive a gift then you must sign up and create something for someone else.
The Junetide 2012 Schedule:
9th-24th March: Sign-ups.
30th March: Prompts are posted.
30th March-8th April: Prompt selection.
22nd April: Assignments are sent out
17th May: Last day to drop out without penalty.
7th June: Deadline for assignments.
21st June: Anonymous posting of work begins.
24th June: Deadline for pinch-hit assignments and treats.
~30th June: Anonymous posting of work ends.
~a few days later: Gift creators are revealed. (These two dates will be finalised when there is a better idea of how many participants there are.)
How will Junetide work?
The first stage is signing up! On the sign-up form you’ll give the mods your contact info and four prompts. These prompts will be sent to your giftcreator as their assignment. Out of the four, you will choose one or two to appear on the Prompt Selection form -- you can have either the same prompt in the Art section and the Fiction section (one total), one prompt in either Art or Fiction (one total), or separate prompts in Art and Fiction (two total).
Once sign-ups have finished, a list of the chosen prompts will be posted. On the selection form you’ll pick which of the prompts you would be interested in getting as an assignment, and additionally any prompts you would be okay with getting, in case you can’t get one of your first choices. You will only receive one of these as an assignment, but picking a few means it's more likely that you'll receive something you're interested in.
Then you will receive your assignments. You do not necessarily have to fulfil the prompt you saw on the selection post -- you can choose any of the four written in the assignment. You’ll have two months to write or draw your assignment.
Then, over a period of a week or two, all of the gifts (and treats) will be posted anonymously. During this period, we ask that you not reveal yourself or post your work anywhere else. At the end of this, everyone’s names will be revealed (unless you choose to remain anonymous) and you’re free to repost your work at you like.
Prompts
Prompts are what you want to receive, whether in art or writing. Be specific about what’s important to you: genres or characters or setting or scene. But don’t expect your giftcreator to write your perfect novel or draw your perfect Sistine Chapel! Leave some room for them to have fun.
You’re encouraged to include more than just a straight prompt or to write a “Dear Junetide Giftcreator” letter if you want to. (A letter to your giftcreator that you publically post on your journal.) You can write about what sort of things you like and what sort of things you dislike to give them some more ideas. They’re under no obligation to completely follow your letter, however.
Assignments
The minimum for fiction works is 1000 words. There’s no upper limit. Art is impossible to quantify, but please, something that you consider to be finished and decent. No quick sketches or photo manips or icons. Whether you’re doing art or fiction: remember that this is a gift for someone! Please put as much thought and care into your assignment as you hope that your giftcreator puts into your gift.
We encourage you to have your fiction and art beta’d -- but remember that this exchange is anonymous until it’s finished, so don’t publicly post your drafts for opinions.
Do not discuss or complain about your assignment in public!
Treats
Treats are extra gifts you can choose to do, either from your assignment’s unused prompts, the prompts you saw on the selection post, or extra prompts. There will be a post where people can request things they’d like to see in treats. There is no minimum word count or standard for treats! Also, people who did not sign up for Junetide are welcome to submit treats!
Posting
Gifts will be anonymous when it is initially posted. This means that art must not be signed. When writers and artists are revealed, pictures can be replaced with signed versions and creator notes can be added to any post.
It’s most courteous to thank your giftcreator. The work might not match up to what you imagined, but it was still created for you, so be polite and thank them. Absolutely do not insult or complain about your gift in public! If your giftcreator has ignored your prompts or triggers then feel free to contact the mods.
All works must have trigger warnings.
Submitting
Email your submissions to junetide@gmail.com along with the below header.

Writing: Either attach or include it in your submission email. Simple HTML in the text -- such as italics -- is fine, but it's your responsibility. Accepted formats are .txt, .rtf and .doc.

Dropping out and pinch hits
Unexpected things happen! That’s okay. If you have to drop out of Junetide, please let the mods know as soon as possible. The 17th of May is the last day you can drop out without penalty. If you drop out after this date then you will be banned from participating in Junetide 2012 (if 2011 goes well and people want it to happen again).
Don’t worry about your giftcreator dropping out! We will find someone to replace them and create a gift for you. This might involve someone taking on a second assignment, or finding someone who is not participating in Junetide who is nevertheless interested in your prompts.

FAQ
Why June?
That’s when the winter solstice is. And the end/start of the year is pretty busy.
Do I need a Dreamwidth account to participate?
No Announcements will be made on the DW community, so you must keep an eye on it in some way, whether by RSS or your reading list, but you do not need to be a Dreamwidth member.
Do I need to be a southern hemispherer?
No! :D
Do I have to write about/draw my characters or my recipient’s characters?
No! Please don’t draw/write about their characters, as that would not be an original work. You do not have to use your own characters but you are welcome to use them if they would fit in with the prompt. Keep in mind, however, that this could remove your anonymity.
Why are you doing the ‘pick your favourite prompts’ step and not just doing it like Yuletide and Yuletart?
The answer to this is kinda tl;dr, but basically: it will, theoretically, result in happier participants than if we’d gone with Yuletide’s approach.
Why write four prompts but not put all of them up for selection?
Because of reading fatigue! Looking at 40-60 prompts is a LOT different than looking at 160 prompts. We don't want to have people losing interest halfway through the list and ignoring any prompts they might love to get a shot at creating!
Can I remain anonymous even after the reveal?
Yes, if you let us know when you submit your finished assignment. If at any point you wish to change your mind, just let the mods know.
I didn't sign up - can I see the works when they're posted?
Yes! They will all be available for anyone to see.
I didn't sign up in time - can I still join in?
Yes! Even if you haven't signed up, you can still participate in Junetide! You can...
(a) Volunteer to pinch hit! If someone has to drop out of Junetide then we find someone to take over their assignment.
(b) Leave prompt suggestions on the treats post! If someone feels inspired by your prompt then they might write or draw it.
(c) Create treats! Either look at the prompts on the assignment masterlist or the treats suggestions post and create something to post in June.
If you have any questions or comments, please leave them here or PM me!
